Inside Floyd Mayweather's Mind

FLOYD MAYWEATHER has psychological flaws, said Rolando Arellano, the manager of Victor Ortiz, in the build up to the September 17 fight between the two for the latter’s WBC welterweight title.

“You don’t have to be a psychologist. Anyone that needs a house that big, 16 cars, a million dollars’ worth of jewellery, there is an underlying issue there of inadequacy and insecurity, if you need that to feel good,” insisted Arellano. “Anyone that needs to tell you that ‘I’m “Money” Mayweather’ is because without those assets he might be a scared little boy down deep inside. We pick that up.
“He has everything to lose, all the prestige and that record which he protects so much. You can see he’s insecure.”

Mental frailty is of course a charge that has been levelled against Ortiz, once he crumbled against Marcos Maidana and appeared to let Lamont Peterson off the hook in their draw. For Arellano, Victor’s thrilling, see-saw war with Andre Berto, to win his belt, answered all those questions and more.

“This is a man who broke through the threshold of doubt when he became champion with the Berto fight. I think as a result of that, he gained the confidence,” said Arellano. “Now in his mind he’s a world champion.”

But whatever may in fact fuel Mayweather’s fires, Floyd has every reason to trust in his boxing abilities. Victorious in his 41 contests, he’s widely considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, with only Manny Pacquiao there to challenge his supremacy. He must also be used to events of this magnitude, while Ortiz has only now propelled himself to this exalted level.

But Arellano is adamant his man will cope with the occasion, saying, “How is Victor going to handle all this stuff? He’s not, let Floyd handle it. ‘I’m just here to fight.’ It’s just another man in the ring. Human beings make mistakes and he better not make that mistake on September 17.”

Danny Garcia, Ortiz’s trainer, declared there were no chinks in his charge’s psychological armour, saying, “Victor’s confident, Victor’s calm, Victor’s ready for anything. He’s a man, he’s not a kid. He’s ready for everything.”

As their fight draws closer Mayweather has flung some verbal jabs Ortiz’s way. It remains to be seen if they rattled the younger man. Floyd has supposedly invited Danny Garcia’s brother Robert to the fight, to annoy the Ortiz corner seeing as the two brothers fell out after Victor switched from one trainer to the other.

“I heard one rumour he’s bringing in my brother and Brandon Rios. What does that have to do with the fight?” Danny Garcia commented. “They’re not going to help him. He can bring the president if it wants. He can bring the whole army if he wants. The only guys that are going to be inside the ring are him and my champion, Victor Ortiz. And my champion is better than him.”
